Pope to Bring Back the Latin Mass

From the London Times:

THE Pope is taking steps to revive the ancient tradition of the Latin Tridentine Mass in Catholic churches worldwide, according to sources in Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI is understood to have signed a universal indult — or permission — for priests to celebrate again the Mass used throughout the Church for nearly 1,500 years. The indult could be published in the next few weeks, sources told The Times.

I like the spin in the headline: “Pope set to bring back Latin Mass that divided the Church.” This was done by the same journalist who wrote this snarky article.

  1. David B. Says:

I find that the media almost never gets religion right. I literally mean it, almost never. I am always finding factual errors in media articles.

I am glad to see that the Tridentine Mass may possibly be permitted for use without permission, but the Novus Ordo Latin option is currently available to any priest anywhere and it rarely gets used, so I am not holding my breath that much change will happen.

I am not sure if I would get much out of the Tridentine mass every week. I think Good Counsel Church in Kansas City does a good job of mixing English and Latin, in a way consistent with the use of the vernacular as outlined in Vatican II.
