Catholic and Evangelical Go at it…

And the Catholic loses!

Come on Dan (The Catholic), we believe those same Scriptures Zach (Evangelical) is throwing out, and the Catholic Church he is arguing against is a caricature! We do not believe Mary is the mediator between God and man, and we do believe Mary needed a savior! Jack Chick could come up with better objections.

I notice too Zach brings up the “plain meaning” of Scripture, as if such a thing exists ;).

By the way, this is from the A and E Show “God or the Girl.” I have been watching way too much You Tube lately!

Why did I post this? It was not to belittle a fellow Catholic, or to put down Dan, because when placed in the same situation I cannot say how I would responded, especially with cameras rolling. I posted this because it is becoming increasingly important to be able to explain (to different types of people in different contexts) what we believe, and this clip shows why.

David - I am hooked on youtube, so don’t feel too bad.

As far as the clip you posted, my wife and I were yelling at the TV when they aired that originally, as Dan seemed to be rather inept and inarticulate in the encounter. I kind of felt bad for him, really. He is clearly sincere and just trying to do some good, so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and guessing the fundy just caught him off guard.

I watched that a few days ago, I wanted to shake Dan badly.

    Meh…

Dan coulda done better….but so what? What makes it his job to refute this ignorant spooftexter’s every point?

Not everyone is quick-witted in a live argument. Depending on my mood and level of caffeine intake, I might react very similarly.

    I agree with Chad.

If our fundamentalist’s mind is ever going to be changed, it isn’t going to be through a quick oral exchange. It would involve either a long academic process of learning or through witnessing the good works and charity of Catholics, or both.

I actually saw this on YouTube months ago, and I wasn’t very impressed. My suspicion is that the whole thing was done on purpose to perpetuate stereotypes about Catholics and Protestants.

Oh, and I’d tell him where he could put his “Stamp of Cooperation”.

Do we have to answer a fundamentalist? No, but it sure looks good if we can at least muster something up, especially if it is going on national TV. I didn’t post this to make fun of Dan, or to make Catholics look bad, but to illustrate that objections from fundamentalists (and I would add secularists as well) are natural and going to increase rather than decrease, and that it never hurts to brush up on ways to explain our faith. Who knows, anyone of us could have choked in the same situation, but I can guarantee that we would be prepared the next time, if at least to correct a few misconceptions for those overhearing the discussion (whether the anti-Catholic person will change his mind is doubtful).

I think that the video makes Zach look bad to a general audience, and in that way is unfortunately stereotypical. We insiders see it as an apologetics mishap, whereas I suspect most people see it as a nice, sincere guy being tripped up by an uptight know-it-all.

I would be interested to find out Zach’s denominational affiliation, since he appeals to the “plain meaning of Scripture” and he simply believes in faith “as defined by the new testament,” two red flags in my book.

It is interesting because he used the word “Magnifcat.” No offense to my fundamentalist friends, but most of them I know wouldn’t use the term Magnificat. So maybe this guy is an ex-Catholic. Either way, the encounter is a bit odd in a way.

Quotes from one of dan’s roomates(?)

Well I think he just got flustered on camera and just wasn’t expecting it. I’d put any of us 10 guys up against anybody any day…fort zion is littered w/apologetics…so we’ll just blame it on the camera…
