Huh? At A Catholic College?

I thought this altar/chapel arrangement as found at the Washburn University Catholic center was the norm everywhere… but maybe not…

at least in Wyoming: “The chaplain will, of course, be orthodox in faith and morals, above reproach, and in good canonical standing with ecclesiastical authorities. He must also understand and agree with the distinctive vision and mission of Wyoming Catholic College as articulated in the Philosophical Vision Statement, the Catalog, and other printed materials (available upon request). The chaplain should be academically oriented in his interests, energetic in engaging the college students, capable of preaching to the students and responding to their needs, and comfortable with offering spiritual direction. Ideally the priest should be enthusiastic about outdoor activities and, if possible, take part in them from time to time. As a college striving to be authentically Catholic, WCC places at the center of its daily life the worthy celebration of the Mass, drawing extensively upon the Church’s rich Tradition. The liturgy and other devotions are celebrated in a manner that stresses continuity with that Tradition, as Pope Benedict has repeatedly urged the Church to do. Such treasures as the Latin language and Gregorian chant are held in utmost respect.”
I sure hope they can make a go of it out there in Wyoming.

All best wishes to Wyoming Catholic College. I hope they can achieve much for the faith by positively implementing their vision. The only danger I would see is the temptation the author of the posting seemingly fell to.

There is no need to be cutting down others. Washburn College Catholic Comunity is witnessing the faith of Jesus Christ. They are a small community with limited resources gathering in a small space. These good young people have worked to beautify their chapel (moving it up from the basement) and I find its design quite appropriate for their situation. Simple and reverent.

The altar/chapel at Washburn University does look pretty “dry”. Why don’t they have a nicer looking altar/chapel? Is it because they don’t have the resources/money? Is it because of moderninsm? Can it be attributed to the “spirit of Vatican II”? I do not know.

All I can do is be thankful to God for the Catholic ministry center at my university (The University of Illinois at Chicago). We have a decent chapel. Much nicer than the Washburn chapel. We have a moderate amount of images, statues, and even Byzantine icons! The priests are great and so are the faithful that frequent the chapel for daily and weekend Mass.

Sorry Katherine, there was no falling into temptation on that one.

What has pictured has been the norm in my part of the world for 30+ very tired years. What parishes or chapels want for themselves, as often as not they can get.

When the WCCC is ready to have some statues, paintings icons, rugs, and finer appointments for their chapel to celebrate Mass, let them contact me. I know a half dozen people that have been rescuing decent traditional appointments for several decades from churches that either have been closed or have “rennovated.”
