Our Lady of Consolation Shrine, Carey, Ohio

O.L. of Consolation

Need to make a pilgrimage? I know. Sometimes I just need it bad. If you are in the NW Ohio region, you might want to visit an out of the way gem, the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio. The Conventual Franciscans have had healing ministry there since the 1880’s with the present basilica completed in 1821. On Sunday afternoons at 2:30pm there is benediction followed by an opportunity to have a friar pray over you with a relic of the True Cross. It is powerful, stuff and a peaceful and grace filled place.

A few of PC’s contributors met there for the first time recently, and I thought I would share some of my pics.

And a wonderful oddity, the likes of which I had never seen, a plaster relief of souls being delivered from purgatory by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross made present again through the offering of the Mass, incredible. (We need more of these!)

    Fr. J,

That was a wonderful day. Jennifer and I enjoyed meeting you and SS.

I have found Carey to be a special place. I have visited there many times, and it is always meaningful and spiritually refreshing. Can one have a “home shrine?” If so, this is mine!

David, I had a great time meeting you all and going to the shrine. I returned there on Sunday and had some remarkable experiences. It was everything a pilgrimage should be. Next time I will make the photos smaller. Still learning the finer points of blog composition.

    Fr. J,

That’s ok about the photos. I went in and shrunk the first one down a little (it was bleeding over to the side). You are doing a fine job posting with WordPress.

By the way, those are great photos. I absolutely love that relief of the altar and the souls being delivered from purgatory. I have never seen anything quite like that before.

It looks like a very nice place!

By the way, great pictures Father.

I am really impressed with the quality of the photos and how they turned out… I was skeptical about the “Purgatory altar” when you took it as the chapel was on the darker side at that point in the day… But great details!

I am warming up to WordPress
