A sermon on divine election, given by Father Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Chicago for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
SUMMARY OF THE SERMON:
One of the key themes of the Bible is the divine election, the fact that God chooses. But God chooses, not on the basis of merit, but simply through and because of his grace. And he chooses, not to glorify those whom he elects, but rather to give them a mission of love. Accordingly, he chose Israel so that it might be a priestly nation; and he chose the twelve so that they might proclaim the kingdom, and he chose us the baptized that we might be conduits of his grace to the world.

Thanks…I forwarded this to my Reformed Baptist family and friends with the subject Re: Thomists and Calvinists Together. :)

Haven’t had a chance to listen to this yet, but this is exactly the kind of things I’ve been looking for. Thanks!

In light of this, I have a question about Ephesians 1:3-14. Who is predestined here, and what exactly does Catholicism, perhaps more specifically, Thomism, mean by, “Predestined?”
Thanks,

And yet so man choose to ignore Him.

BJ:
Off the top of my head, answers to your questions would be:
1. The baptized.
2. “Predestination is nothing else than the foreknowledge and foreordaining of those gracious gifts which make certain the salvation of all who are saved.” (St. Augustine, Persever 14:35)

Jason has read Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange’s work on the subject. Might be a good resource to look into further.

Chad, thanks for the links, explanations, and especially for the book recommendation. I will have to pick that one up.
So does “Baptized” = “Church?” Calvinists tend to interpret this verse individually (I have been predestined; you have been predestined), but I’ve been wondering recently, if Paul was referring to the Church at large (We have been predestined). That seems to fit in line with your Baptized definition, I think… perhaps not.
Cheers!
