One of my friends who’s seriously considering becoming Catholic is looking for options on books about the saints. Though there is plenty of stuff online, he wants a hard copy. Preferences would be: one-volume, little liberal or anti-miracle agenda, and up-to-date with the current calendar.
I know TAN has a one-volume Butler’s, which would probably be perfect, but it’s the previous calendar.

Here are my suggestions:
Padre Pio: A Man of Hope by Renzo Allegri — this book FREAKED me out.
and
Saint Faustina’s Diary, St. Teresa of Avila’s Autobiography, and I really enjoyed a totally secular translations of St, John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul by Mirabel Starr.

I second Saint Faustina’s Diary! Next to the Bible, it is the most important book I own–and the one I turn to constantly for consolation.

This one, The Book of Saints is probably my favorite. I have an out-of-print edition. It is basically a dictionary of saints, which includes a little bio and dates for hundreds of saints (including those on local calendars, like Old Testament figures, e.g. Adam and Eve). It is very comprehensive. It is historically based and objective, although it isn’t really “inspirational.”
